While there are 10 species of wild cats in Africa, when they think of Africa most people think of the 3 big cats – lions, leopards and cheetahs. We lucky enough to see all of the big cats in multiple camps, in multiple situations, though the quality of the sightings were mixed, ranging from low energy (and frankly dull) sleeping lions

to energized playful cheetah cubs

and leopards stalking prey (unsuccessfully)

Going in October it was Africa’s spring, and spring means a lot of babies and we saw our share

We were lucky enough to see cubs of all three big cat species:

We would often return from our afternoon game drives after dark, and it few times had some interesting encounters with the big cats.  A couple of times we followed them as they went out to hunt, a difficult enough thing to do in the daylight but at night a real adventure.

During the day the cats like to sleep a lot and when they wake up they yawn a lot.  In person this is a nonevent, but when captured  in camera, they look ferocious

With a trip of over a month and staying a 5 camps, I felt it was too much to put into one report.   While each camp had its unique vibe and mix of animals, we saw many  animals in multiple camps.  So instead of organizing the rest of my report by camp, it is organized by type of wildlife.  The links for these reports are below:
